So, the elections are over and Barack Obama has come out as the President Elect and will take office on January 10, 2009. Obama has made history by becoming the first African-American President of the United States. It seems apparent to me now that perhaps I did not understand how important this election was to so many people.
As a Conservative, I was feeling disenfranchised from my Party by the out of control spending and run amok spying initiated by the current administration. Therefore, it was my intention to vote for Ron Paul this election cycle, but alas, it was not to be. However, I know a few Republicans that did change sides and vote for Barack Obama, and I cannot blame them considering my own feelings.
I believe that this election was not only a historical one, but also one in which the conservatives in the Republican Party decided to send a message to the Party leaders and that message was start taking care of issues that we believe to be important, the economy, immigration, and the wars. Nevertheless, Obama it seems is giving people a new hope and people are likening the election to the return to the Camelot of the JFK administration.
Even I must admit that when I hear a speech from Obama I too feel as though there is some hope for this country and I puff up with pride and a renewed spirit. However, the cynical side of me says that all things will remain the same or maybe even get worse. I am happy to say that many people do not share my cynicism and are ecstatic for the perceived change in direction that this country will take. I only pray that their newfound hope is not in vain.
I suppose we have no choice but to wait and see what is to come out of this administration and hope for the best. I will say that there are vast differences between the beliefs of John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. JFK was actually more Conservative than most Republicans, or should I say Neo-Cons. JFK was actually for disbanding the Fed and that is part of why some say that he was assassinated, just a theory as far as I know.
The only thing that scares me in this cycle is that the Democrats gained power in the Presidency, the House, and the Senate, which they might consider a mandate for their programs and it is certainly not the case. It is my belief that the people have simply said that they are tired of the direction that the country is going in, especially the economy.
