During his speech titled as “A More Perfect Untion” on Tuesday, March 18, Obama addressed the issue of race. The speech came after the notorious and controversial “God Damn America” speech made by Obama’s pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. It had brought forth much backlash against Obama.
In Obama’s speech about race, he talked about his white grandmother. That comment had brought forth fresh criticism. On CNN’s Larry King on Thursday night, Obama addressed the comment and the criticisms.
On the show, Obama explained that he meant about the words of “typical white woman” was the stereotypes that go along with street crimes. He continued by talking about the responses what he thinks what most people feel about such stereotypes. In a sense, Obama was addressing the issue of racial stereotypes.
“And so the point I made is that good people, people who are not in any way racist, are still subject to some of these images and stereotypes and that it’s very hard to escape from them,” Obama explained.
The issue of race within the Democratic races has emerged in full view after the comment made by former New York Representative Geraldine Ferraro, a supporter of Clinton. Ferraro said that if Obama was white, he would not be a major candidate in the race.
The Clinton campaign denounced the comment by Ferraro. Ferraro resigned from being part of the finance committee for the Clinton campaign. She was a major fundraiser for Clinton.
After Wright’s “God Damn America” sermon, the issue of race shifted towards Obama.
In his unity speech, Obama said that the issue of race cannot be ignored.
