An undisclosed police investigation might lead to the downfall of Ehud Olmert, the current Prime Minister of Israel. Judges have refused to speak to the press about the details of this investigation but many speculate that it could be the end of Olmert.
The judicial inquiry could be related to some allegations regarding Olmert’s tenure as mayor of Jerusalem, more specifically bribery. As of now, only his personal assistant has been put on house arrest.
Olmert has been linked to some corruption scandals in the last couple of years, and he has always claimed his innocence. To a larger extent this affair comes at a time when President Bush is expected to visit Israel for the 60 year commemoration of its existence and this would definitely be seen as a hindering to the national celebration. Even the peace process would be set a back if Olmert’s credibility as a trustworthy representative of Israel was in doubt.
