Recent parliamentary election defeat came as a rude jerk to the CPM party who are ruling over the state over 32 years. Past elections have been won by brute force terrorising opposition parties. There was widespread allegation of rigging. The party behaves in an authoritarian way and for the last 32 years gagged all opposition voices, creating a partisan administration, politicising education and promoting militan trade union movement that drove industry out of West Bengal. Public services, urban infrastructure have been brought to a pathetic state. These are rarely publicised in the west, of a vestige of a Stalinist Communist rule in Eastern India. However, landslide electoral win pf opposition alliance has given rise to a hope of at last being rid of the prolonged Fascist rule in Bengal.
