Pakistan plans to plant 11mn saplings in a day to set up World Record
PESHAWAR, March 22: Federal Ministry of Environment has planned to set a world record by planting more than 11 million saplings in a single day in addition to planting more than 130 million saplings during spring and monsoon seasons in the country.
This was said by Federal Minister for Environment, Hameedullah Jan Afridi while addressing an event organized in connection with celebration of World Forest Day here at Pakistan Forest Institute (PFI).
The event was organized as part of the calendar of activities chalked out for he celebration of 2009 as the National Year of Environment.
The Minister also inaugurated the forest product exhibition at Pakistan Forest Institute and participated in plantation campaign organized by students of Beacon House School.
Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister for Environment said government attaches highest priority to the development of forest resources and has set the targets of increasing forest area of the country from existing 5.1 to 6% by 2015 under Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
The plan also included increasing protected areas from the existing 11% to 15% during this period.
Hameedullah Jan Afridi said Ministry of environment is planning to set a world record by planting more than 11 million saplings in a single day which will be in addition to planting more than 130 million saplings during spring and monsoon seasons.
We have involved general public, non governmental organizations, educational
institutions, government ministries and departments and corporate sector to participate not only in spring and monsoon tree planting campaigns but also make an effort to establish Guinness World Record.
The Federal Minister said that the Ministry of Environment is funding mega forestry projects in all four provinces, AJK, Northern Areas and FATA at a cost of Rs. 13.5 billion. The Ministry also sponsors small forest resources projects in the provinces.
He announced that funding to the provinces would be made in future on the basis of their performance. The provinces playing active role for development of the forests would be given additional resources whereas the funding of the provinces which fail to show remarkable performance would be diverted to other provinces.
Minister apprised the participants of the event that government is making all out efforts for the development of the forestry sector resources in the country. The Ministry of Environment is celebrating spring and monsoon tree planting campaigns every year in cooperation with the Provincial Forest Departments and related organizations to boost the efforts for increasing the forest cover and raising awareness in this regard.
