Schedule for presidential election in Pakistan is announced on Friday by Kanwar Dilshad Secretary Pakistan Election Commission, while talking to the newsmen in Islamabad he had disclosed that on 6th of September 2008 presidential elections polling will be held, nomination papers can be filed till 26th of August 2008 by presidential candidates, scrutiny of nomination papers will be done till 28th of August and candidates can take their nomination papers back to withdraw from elections till 30th of August.
Pakistan’s presidential election campaign is a limited and indirect affair, president is elected through Electoral College and electors are elected members of provincial assemblies including both houses of federal legislature. Unlike USA where president is directly elected by the vote of the people though electors and Electoral College is there but people elect electors and then number of electors vote decide the fate of US presidential candidate, in Pakistan president is elected through votes of elected legislators of provincial and federal legislatures.
Due to indirect method of elections people of Pakistan take very little interest in presidential elections, campaign is mostly confined to the electors of electoral college, though during past 15 years powers of Pakistan’s president are considerably increased but due to lack of popular base because of indirect method of election president’s office do not enjoy that popular support which is required to run the affairs of a federation.
PPPP lead coalition government enjoys absolute majority in National Assembly and four provincial assemblies of Pakistan, the moment coalition government will nominate its presidential candidate the outcome of presidential election will become known till 26th of August prior to the September 6th polling day.
