Pulwama (South Kashmir), April 27 –Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, ,former chief minister of J&K and patron, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the country’s leadership must take note of the sentiment of peace emanating from Jammu and Kashmir and accord it the desired response to resolve the State’s problems.
In Pulwama on Monday while addressing a public meeting, Sayeed said the people have offered a fresh opportunity for the resolution of the State’s problems through peaceful and democratic means and the country’s leadership must now respond to the new situation by addressing the issues concerning the State with a sense of urgency, sincerity and seriousness. “A new scenario, free of discord and disruption, has come into sight in the six-decade-old history of Jammu & Kashmir for the peaceful resolution of the State’s problems,” he said and added that the previous attempts at resolution had, unfortunately, resulted only in confrontation and bargaining counter for power.
Sayeed said during the last six decades, the State kept only losing the identity and powers that it had acquired after a long and painful struggle for self-rule. “Miseries mounted, economy ravaged and generations suffered,” he said and added that the State’s problems could find reasonable solution if approached with open mind and a will to move ahead.

Demanding immediate implementation of the recommendations of the Working Groups constituted by the Prime Minister, Sayeed said any delay in doing so can generate further frustrations on political and economic fronts within the State. “The complete restoration of rights of the State over its water resources should begin with the return of central power projects to the State as recommended by the Working Group on economic matters and also by the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Economic Development of Jammu & Kashmir headed by former RBI Governor Rangarajan,” he said.
Expressing dismay over the worsening power supply position, Sayeed said instead of indulging in political histrionics, it would have been better for the present Government to focus on improving delivery of public utilities including electricity, better roads, drinking water supply, social services, supply of rations and tackling unemployment. “Having failed to deliver on its commitments made with the people, during 2008 assembly elections, the NC-led Government is now trying to divert the attention of the people from its failures by indulging in mud-slinging against its political opponents,” he said.

Referring to other developmental projects initiated by the PDP-led Coalition Government in Pulwama, Sayeed said his Government had also taken up four-lanning of Gallander-Shopian road and besides establishing the Islamic University at Awantipora, his Government had also planned to set up a super-specialty hospital near Gallandar, Pampore. “While a degree college for women has already been sanctioned for Pulwama, a polytechnic is also approved for the district,” he said. Projects have also been approved for upgradation of Pulwama-Tahab-Litter-Sangam and Pulwama-Tahab-Chakoora-Sangam roads, he said and added that a park is also being developed in Pulawama town.
While expressing gratitude to the people of Pulwama and Shopian for having given a clear mandate to the PDP in the 2008 assembly elections, Sayeed said he is expecting a similar gesture from the emancipated voters of the area during the ongoing parliamentary polls.
