PDP fighting elections to protect dignity, honour of people of J&K: Mufti

Srinagar, November 20, (Scoop News)- Seeking a decisive mandate to protect special constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir, patron of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that PDP was fighting elections to protect dignity and honour of people of the State.
Addressing a function to welcome eminent journalist Zafar Meraj, who has joined PDP, Mufti said that under the Indian Constitutional, the State of Jammu and Kashmir has been granted a special constitutional position but some forces were hell bent to dilute that special status. “It is need of the hour to frustrate designs of such forces”, Mufti said while exhorting the people to come out in large number to exercise their right to franchise in the coming assembly elections.
Zafar Meraj, who has formally joined PDP, has been given mandate by the party from Habakadal assembly segment of Srinagar city. Along with Zafar Meraj, another prominent personality of Srinagar city Prof Farooq Fayaz also joined PDP.
“It the not the question of Mufti Sayeed or Zafar Meraj but the issue is protecting special constitutional provision of Jammu and Kashmir”, Mufti said and asked the people to give a decisive mandate to PDP to counter nefarious agenda of divisive forces desperately trying to polarize sensitive state of Jammu and Kashmir to reap political benefits.
“Only PDP leadership has potential to counter onslaught on the special constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir”, he said and advised that people that boycott was not going to serve any purpose. “In a democratic system like ours ballot is only mean to solve problems”, he said and exhorted people to use ballot as a mean to teach a lesson to those who are responsible for their woes.
Reminding the people how PDP had used democratic means to script new chapter in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti said that with just 16 MLAs PDP had changed political discourse of Jammu and Kashmir. He recalled how PDP during its tenure had pursued the agenda of peace and reconciliation in Jammu and Kashmir and restored lasting peace in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Zafar Meraj expressed his gratitude towards PDP leadership for reposing faith on him and giving him such an important responsibility. “I will try my best to come up to the expectation of the people and party leaders”, Mr Zafar said.
Prof Fayaz in his address said that state of Jammu and Kashmir was passing through very crucial juncture and it was need of the hour to strengthen hands of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Zafar Manhas, chief coordinator election and state secretary of PDP, Ashraf Mir, Naseer Mandoo and others also spoke on the occasion.
