Leadership of the “leading Ukrainian advocate” in Europe, as Poland calls itself, seems to have finally take off interests of Ukraine in the confrontation with Russia for the sake of their economic and political interests in cooperation with Russia and delegates their representatives to participate in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
According to preliminary information, CEO of number energy companies in Poland, including the President of the Polish oil concern “Orlen” (PKN Orlen SA) Dariusz Jacek Krawiec, plans to participate in SPIEF-2014, which will be held on May 21-22 in Russia’s northern capital. Nevertheless, the most striking is that a positive decision regarding his visit to the Russian Federation was previously made personally by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, despite claims on pursuing European solidarity on the issue of sanctions against Russia.
This decision was also agreed with the foreign minister of the Republic of Poland Radosław Sikorski and Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Janusz Piechociński, and was based on an attempt to avoid further economy losses of confrontation with Russia.
Polish leadership has repeatedly stated that fully supports and will promote Ukraine’s European integration efforts. However, their actions causes frustration regarding loud statements of “the main defender of Ukrainian interests in Europe” and the real actions that indicate that for the PKN Orlen SA and the country’s leadership more important is to gain profit from cooperation with Russia than to provide full and unquestionable support of Ukraine.
Certainly, one can understand the business logic of companies, backed by thousands of employees, well-being of their families and billions invested in the business. But why then arrange this “show off” with sanctions that are not only non-effective, but, in practice, are neglected by those who have imposed them.
