According to a report by CBS News affiliate WGCL-TV, Herbie Deshawn Durham was charged on Wednesday night with two counts of murder.
“The walls are beginning to fall down around the ones who committed this crime,” Terrell Bolton, Dekalb Police Chief had said on a Wednesday night news conference. The police say that at least another person that is connected with the two murders is still on the run.
On Wednesday, police had combed through the area in search of two gunmen after two off-duty officers were killed. It looks as if the two officers were ambushed when the killing took place in what residents call a high-crime neighborhood.
While off-duty, both officers worked as security guards at the complex. They were investigating a person that looked suspicious at the complex. Shots were fired early Wednesday with both officers getting killed.
The dead officers were wearing on their police uniforms.
“They never had a chance,” Bolton said to reporters. He added: “What a horrible, horrible way to die.”
Resident Patreka Anderson said that she was awakened by the gunshots. However, she did not think anything due to the neighborhood around the Glenwood Gardens complex with a high concentration of prostitution and drug activity.
“We always hear shooting,” Anderson said. She added: “I didn’t think that was any big deal.”
The dead officers were identified as 26-year-old Ricky Bryant Jr. and 33-year-old Eric Barker. Barker was a two year veteran along. Both officers were married with four children each.
