Police are conducting raids on the residences of arms dealers and nazims of union councils to recover illicit arms after the arrest of district public safety commission (DPSC) chairman and union council nazim Chaudhry Adnan Ahmad Balagan.
Police sources claimed that UC nazims were being supplied illicit arms to harass supporters of rival groups in the upcoming general elections.
They said that DPSC chairman Balagan was arrested from the district courts on the information provided by arrested arms dealer and UC nazim Atif Masood Butt.
They claimed that police recovered a Kalashnikov and other illicit arms from the possession of Balagan. They said more arrests were expected in the next 24 hours.
It may be mentioned that the city district police had arrested around two dozen people, including UC nazims Atif Masood Butt (Gill Road), Nasir Goraya (Khiali Town) Nadim Butt (Ratta Road), Abdullah, son of former city nazim Babu Javed Ahmad, besides arms dealers a few days back.
DIG Khadim Hussain Bhatti told reporters that 121 illicit arms, including Kalashnikovs, rifles, pump action guns, pistols, sten guns and revolvers, were recovered from their possession.
It was stated that those arrested were supporters of PML-Q leader Chaudhry Hamid Nasir Chattha.

According to reports, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif will address a public meeting at Sheranwala Bagh on GT Road at 1pm for which all arrangements have been made.
The political pundits say that Nawaz Sharif may announce the decision to take part in the elections.
KILLED: A minor girl was killed while a youth sustained injuries when they caught in firing between two rival groups in Gondlanwala village on Friday.
According to reports reaching here, the Nadim and Saeed groups were engaged in the shootout when Shaista (6) and Nadim trapped in it. The former died on the spot while the latter sustained bullet wounds. He was rushed to the local DHQ Hospital in critical condition.
Aroop police have registered a case against both groups and are investigating.
