Multi sectoral groups including three prominent Catholic Bishops yesterday called on President Arroyo to resign. The Bishops accused the President of mismanagement of the country’s wealth, travesty of the law, political killings and other allegations concerning her immediate family. The groups are planning to stage mass protests to pressure Mrs. Arroyo to vacate her sullied post. Part of their call is for the office of the Vice President, the Senate President and the House Speaker to be vacated. A transition government, to be headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, would lead the country and later call for a snap election. But the President and her cabinet secretaries ignored the latest attempt to ease her out of office. Instead she promised to just perform her normal duties and not confront her detractors head on. This latest development could trigger turmoil in the remaining three years in office of the Arroyo government. Political analysts this time surmised that the situation would become complicated. Some political allies of the President are already showing distrust and displeasure. The granting of pardon to former President Estrada had caused division in the government. Misunderstanding considerably dented the close relationship of her friends and cabinet officials. This time around, the government would be spending more time doing damage control and start cleaning up their mess. But it’s already too late because the civil society is now preparing for a showdown. As promised, the Bishops will spearhead the initial march protest and test anew the government’s calibrated preemptive response.
