Virginia governor Bob McDonnell has proposed a plan to privatize the state’s liquor store, which are called ABC stores.
He was in Harrisonburg, VA on Thursday, August 26, to discuss and try to build support for the plan. He said, " The government does not need to be in the business of alcohol distribution." He claims the plan would bring 300 to 500 million dollars to the state when it sells the 332 state owned ABC stores. He plans to use these funds to address transportation issues in the state.
Studies by Virginia Commonwealth University suggest that most state residents do not support McDonnell’s plan. They prefer the current system of state owned stores. Also, many churches in the state don’t support the plan.
Personally, I don’t believe the liquor stores should be privatized. I prefer the current plan of having state owned stores. They are less likely to sell alcohol to minors.
