Today, presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona was supposed to have a fundraiser at the home of Texas oilman, Clayton Williams. However, a joke made by Williams had caused McCain to call off the fundraiser. Recently, McCain has been trying to reach out to women voters. It is unknown what damage the joke made by Williams will inflict on McCain’s campaign.
Reaching out to women voters has been one of the priorities of the McCain campaign.
Back in 1990, Williams was running up against Democrat Ann Richards to be the Governor of Texas. However, Williams had lost the election. Williams made a very demeaning joke that revolved around Richards.
Williams had said: “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.” He compared the weather conditions to rape. Then, Williams made another rape joke about Richards. He would make the same comparison to his cattle such as dragging her through the dirt.
These remarks had spread across the internet like wildfire. However, the McCain campaign said that it was unaware.
Just recently, McCain said that his wife and Obama’s wife should be treated as respect.
According to the local newspaper, Williams said that over $300,000 was raised for the McCain campaign. The McCain campaign refused to return the money saying that the money did not come from Williams; but, from other people.
The Democrats fired back at McCain.
“Senator McCain’s claim of ignorance is no excuse for refusing to do the right thing now. Offensive, disgusting comments like these cannot be tolerated,” said Karen Finney, the spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
This may end up being used as ammo against McCain in the near future.
There is the interesting irony that a remark would escape Williams’ mouth as McCain is trying to reach out to women voters. At the same time, McCain said that he and Obama’s wife need to be respected.
