Recruitment Associates says that quality not quantity is the key to the jobs market’s role in the US recovery.
Despite the blowout November non-farm payrolls data number, sales, financial and IT specialist recruitment consultancy, Recruitment Associates says that the over-representation of low-wage service and retail sector jobs in the Labor Department data means that the long term viability of the overall US economic recovery is in question.
The firm, which provides key human resources into several financial and banking sectors both in the US and Asian markets says that people taking part-time, temporary and seasonal employment within low paying sectors are unlikely to be able to participate in the slow revitalization of the housing market or help lift retail sales to any significant degree.
“Most of the people taking these jobs have done so because of the ending of unemployment benefit extensions and they need to pay their bills like everyone else. Some people are taking 2 or 3 jobs just to be able to make their rent or heat their homes but there seems to be a full on party in the financial markets as if happy days are here again,” explained Todd Killeon, Chief Account Executive at Recruitment Associates.
Recruitment Associates says it is expanding its operations in Asia but has no plans yet to ramp up activity in Europe. “Things are so moribund over there right now; there seems to be an inertia built around a reluctance to invest based on perfectly understandable gloomy expectations for the euro zone’s future,” Killeon said.
“Quality, not quantity is the order of the day. A nation of minimum wage part-timers isn’t going to drive the recovery. We need to invest in education and re-training or, frankly, be prepared to keep bringing in talent from abroad,” concluded Killeon.
