— According to a recent report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Romania has got something serious to worry about: Romanian women are most trafficked, so the country is top of the Southeaste Europe states as far as the number of human trafficking victims is concerned.

The report is based on an analyses of the states of things in 10 states in the region. In Romania there were identified 2,285 victims only in 2006, almost ten times more than in all the other countries taken together. 64% of these victims were trafficked for sexual exploitation and 56% are women aged between 14 and 25. If demographic and crime statistics are correct, a Romanian girl is very likely to fall victim to the trafficking in human beings, the UNODC experts estimate. But there is also the fact that figures are difficult to relate to those collected in the region or in the Western states. In an attempt to find an explanation, the UNODC argues that either the figures can’t be compared for certain reasons or the other states in Southeast Europe have failed to detect the real complexity of the phenomenon. And the third possible explanation is that this difficulty is present mostly in Romania.
EU accession is a bless for Romanian and Bulgarian prostitutes According to the Romanian agency that counters the trafficking in human beings, most victims identified in 2006 and 2007 had Spain and Italy as destination. On the other hand, the Italian Police claim Romanian women are just a third of the victims related to the human trafficking. The number reached 138 in 2004 and 2005. According to the Europol, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Great Britain are the main destination for trafficked victims. Still the number of victims and dealers retained in Southeast Europe is small. What is more surprising is that most victims come from Romania and Bulgaria, states that joined the EU in 2007, but not from Albania and the Moldovan Republic, poor states previously related to the trafficking in human beings. The visa free for Romanians and Bulgarians is one reason for it, for prostitutes are now free to travel. The visa free would be a bless for Albanians and Moldovans wishing to work in the EU illegally. So the Romanian and Bulgarian women in statistics may be false victims of the trafficking in human beings. |
