The Aligarh Muslim University is making an effort to facilitate Urdu language as a medium of learning science in madrasas and other schools. The university has decided to translate science textbooks prescribed by various education boards including CBSE, ICSE and the Uttar Pradesh board, into Urdu.
"Urdu has already made a remarkable contribution in poetry and literature and now we want to promote the language as a medium of instruction in subjects like science," AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said. There are no books on science subjects in Urdu and the education of these subjects in madrasas is grossly hampered by this.
The AMU move is, therefore, aimed at popularising science among madrasa students. The translated science books will also be made available to general schools across the country. The spokesperson said AMU will initially translate the textbooks of primary classes and later those of the higher classes.
Translation will be done by the AMU’s Urdu Academy that is funded by the Union human resources development ministry. "The ministry has provided Rs 4 crores as financial assistance for the promotion of Urdu. The translation will be a part of our exercise to promote Urdu as a language," Prof. Qazi Afzal Husain, one of the members of the team entrusted with the translation, said
