Upon winning the United States Presidency and becoming the US President-Elect, Barack Obama has went to former rivals in the Democratic primary contest to fill in vital posts. Hillary Clinton, Obama’s former rival and co-frontrunner in the Democratic contest back in 2008, is now the new US Secretary of State.
Obama had picked New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson to be the next US Secretary of Commerce. However, Richardson withdrew himself because a business he has ties with is under investigation. Today, it seems that Obama may have found a possible replacement for Richardson.
This is quite the interesting one. Obama could possibly appoint a third Republican to his cabinet. That third Republican could be Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire. The fact that Gregg is Republican is interesting enough. But, there are other aspects which makes this possible appointment more interesting.
Richardson is called a liberal Democrat. Gregg is known to be fiscally conservative. There is a great contrast between the two. On top of that, Gregg’s family has ties to former US President George W. Bush.
This could have Senate Democrats crossing their fingers though; not because Gregg is a Republican. Should Gregg be nominated and confirmed, his US Senate seat would be vacant.
It will be up to New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, a Democrat, to find someone to fill the seat. This could bring Senate Democrats closer to the “Magic 60.” However, nothing is for certain. Lynch could pick a Republican to fill the seat.
In the case of Gregg, he is at the top of the list of potentials to be the next US Commerce Secretary. Will this be the case? We will have to wait until Monday. If that is the case, will Lynch pick a Republican or Democrat to fill the vacated seat?
