On October 23, 2014 U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) released the following statement on recent reporting that that Assad regime has dramatically increased its attacks on the Free Syrian Army (FSA), and urging the Obama Administration to commit to a comprehensive strategy to not only train more so called “moderate” Syrian forces to fight against ISIS, but to protect besieged communities from attacks by the Assad regime in Syria, which has capitalized on U.S.-led Coalition airstrikes to launch air and ground assaults on the FSA:
“We are appalled by reports that Assad’s forces have dramatically increased air and ground assaults on opposition-held areas, capitalizing on Coalition airstrikes to advance their brutal campaign against the Syrian people. Ignoring Assad’s attacks, combined with statements made by senior U.S. officials that Syria is not a priority in the fight against ISIS, has led to the perception among Syrians that America has abandoned the Syrian people to suffer at the hands of both Assad and ISIS. This dangerous perception will only fuel greater popular resentment, which benefits ISIS, and make it much more difficult to achieve success in our mission.
“Any plans to train moderate Syrian fighters as a ground force against ISIS will be undermined if regime forces manage to fully besiege Aleppo. And it is simply immoral to ask these fighters to sacrifice their lives in the fight against ISIS when we refuse to protect them against Assad’s assault. It is time for the Administration to reconcile its policy with its actions on the ground and do more to support and empower the Free Syrian Army.
This should be part of a comprehensive strategy that includes additional actions, such as the establishment of safe zones protected by no-fly zones in Syria to protect besieged communities from Assad’s barbaric barrel bombs and ISIS. This is the only way to address the threat posed by ISIS and achieve long-term security and stability in the region.”
Note: The FSA is accused of committing ghastly atrocities against civilians and allying with ISIS.
