MUMBAI: Indices ended sharply lower on Tuesday tracking weak European market. Oil & gas and IT scrips were among the major losers.
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 16,707.50, down 153.40 points or 0.91 per cent. It touched a high of 17,085.63 and low of 16,697.47 in the day.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty declined 1.33 per cent or 67 points to end at 4945.95. The index touched a high of 5,066 and low of 4,943.75.
BSE Midcap Index closed 0.12 per cent lower at 6,937.32 and BSE Smallcap index declined 0.31 per cent to 8,377.70.
Biggest Sensex gainers were Hindalco Industries (down 2.97%), Jaiprakash Associates (1.87%), Tata Steel (1.19%), Satyam Computer (1.13%), HDFC Bank (0.44%) and ICICI Bank (0.42%).
Losers comprised ONGC (down 3.08%), ACC (2.66%), Wipro (2.66%), Tata Consultancy Services (2.33%), Reliance Industries (2.08%), Bharti Airtel (2.03%) and Ranbaxy Laboratories (1.84%).
Market Breadth was positive on the BSE with 1409 gainers and 1310 losers.
High Inflation figures since 2002 in the UK and sub-prime fears spooked the European market. FTSE 100 was down 1.16 per cent, DAX 30 declined 0.38 per cent and CAC 40 fell 0.34 per cent.
