The heavy weight partner of the coalition government in Pakistan,
Mr. Nawaz Sharif has threatened to part away if the judges are not restored by coming Friday. The differences over the judge’s issue came to surface just after resignation of Pervaiz Musharraf who quit the presidency couple of days ago. Mr. Sharif the leader of PML(N), the second largest party in the parliament, told this to media in a recent statement that "We will not try to bring the government down, but of course we then have no choice but to sit in the opposition."
Analysts believe that the hesitation from the senior partner in coalition, the PPP led by Asif Ali Zardari, is mainly because of concern that the deposed chief justice might take up challenges to an amnesty from corruption charges granted to party leaders last year. Sharif said Zardari had earlier assured him that the judges would be reinstated within 24 hours of Musharraf’s impeachment. ‘We supported him on impeachment. It’s now his turn to support us on the reinstatement of judges.’ In the last coalition meeting the leaders of two small parties were given the task to resolve the issues within three days between the big parties. The departure of Sharif’s party from the coalition would not force an election, analysts have said, adding that the PPP, should be able to gather enough support to remain in government. There could be further differences over the fate of departed president, as Mr. Sharif is supporting the idea to bring the Musharraf to a court of law to justify his actions taken by him in his nine years of dictatorial rule.
