Shawn Hornbeck is the boy that 43 year-old pizza parlor manager Michael Devlin held hostage in his house and subjected to four years of sexual abuse and threats on his life. Now, Shawn Hornbeck as granted "48 Hours Mystery" an exclusive interview, his first about the ordeal, where he will describe his four years of living hell.
"I’m not gonna lie – there were times when it seemed like I was better off dead," Hornbeck says in the interview. For the first month of his captivity, Michael Devlin tied Hornbeck to a futon, put duct tape over his mouth and subjected him to almost constant sexual abuse.
Police did not rescue Hornbeck until Michael Devlin kidnapped another boy, 13 year-old Ben Ownby, in front of witnesses. After police rescued the boys in 2007, Michael Devlin was tried in court and sentenced to 74 life sentences for his crimes.
Shawn Hornbeck said that during his four-year ordeal, he was most scared that he would not see his family again, although the possibility of death was with him every day. "There wasn’t a day when I didn’t think he was just gonna kill me," Hornbeck says. He says that his story has "a lot of gory, nasty details that a lot of people really can’t handle."
The "48 Hours Mystery" program will air on CBS this Saturday evening.
