On Saturday, Six accused were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Datia M.P in the Swiss woman gang-rape case. Additional District Judge Jitendra Sharma also levied a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the convicts.
DIG (Chambal Range) DK Arya said the five convicts Baba, Bhutha, Rampro, Brajesh and Vishnu Kanjar were given life term for rape, the sixth accused Nitin Kanjar was given life imprisonment on the charge of robbery.
The Swiss tourist, on a cycling trip along with her husband, was apparently gang-raped at a forest area in Datia district, on the night of March 15. The Swiss couple were adventure tourists camping at a forest area for the night on their way back from Orchha, home to temples of Lord Ram, and were planning to cycle to Agra when they were attacked and robbed by some unidentified persons who mugged their laptop, mobile and other valuables. The offence took place at Jhadia village, eight kms from Datia town, at around 9 pm on March 15
The woman along with her husband was on three months trip to India and was touring the region on a bicycle as part of their India tour.
The Madhya Pradesh police detained the accused and had retrieved the mobile and the laptop stripped from the victim and her husband within two days of the incident, previously, police had apprehended over 20 people for interrogation.
