Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard was just 21 when he died from fatal wounds casused by Taliban fire. His tragic story is like that of thousands of other young soldiers.
But unlike his peers, Bernard’s last moments where caught by AP photographer Julie Jacobson. The image she captured has ignited protest and outrage.
In an audio slideshow, Jacobson admits she expected the photo wouldn’t run, saying, "I didn’t think I could use those casualty pics based on our media rules of engagement."
But AP ran the photos, causing a public uproar and a statement condeming the decision by Robert Gates.
