Continuing high temperatures in Spain have meant an outbreak of forest fires across the main peninsula and on the Canary islands. Most of Spain is now coded as being at very high risk of wild fires and citizens are being cautioned to be very careful when out in the countryside.
Firefighters have been kept very busy trying to control fires which have burnt thousands of hectares of land. So far, six firefighters have lost their lives battling fires. Whilst some of the blazes have been caused by lightning, it is feared that others were started deliberately.
The most recent fires have been on the Canarian Island of La Palma and in the region of Guadalajara. Strong winds and the very high temperatures have led to the rapid spread of the flames. In the latest outbreak , in an area of Guadalajara, 200 people were evacuated and ten homes were destroyed. Firefighters said today that the blaze was now under control.
Meteorologists are forecasting more hot weather, so there is no respite for the firefighters in sight.
