The J&K State government has initiated viable steps to eradicate menace of timber smuggling and also for preservation of environment in the State,said Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Mian Altaf Ahmad in srinagar on Thuresday.
Mian Altaf was addressing a high-level meeting of officers here today, convened to review activities of Forest Department at the divisional-level.

The meeting took several decisions to ensure enforcement of existing laws in order to bring halt to loss of precious timber and allied herbal and medicinal plants on account of illegal timbering. The meeting stressed the need for effective monitoring of forests and its allied resources by the Forest Protection Force.
On the occasion, it was informed that the Forest department and Forest Protection Force has confiscated 1.40 lakh cft timber during the current year so far, which would be distributed among needy consumers within one month. The meeting was told that during the period, 145 vehicles were also seized. He said he will take up the issue of seized vehicle with Advocate General for using the same for use in the Forest Department.
Mian Altaf also directed the concerned to take steps for conservation of natural resources so that the environment is protected.
