Being ex-military, I was specifically trained on what to do if a bomb goes off in my general vicinity.
This however is not the case with most civilians, or even law enforcement for that matter.
So I thought it prudent to set forth some general guidelines for those who might be interested in knowing what to do in such a situation.
In the event of a bomb blast try and turn your body in a direction away from the epicenter. This in an effort to protect your eyes and vital internal organs of your body from damage by flying debris.
Dive flat on the ground away from the epicenter of the blast. The reason for this is because shrapnel tends to explode in an “up and out” direction – so the idea is to get under the wave of debris.
Immediately use your arms to protect your vulnerable eyes and ears – in the familiar aircraft safety position.
Be aware of secondary detonations.
Following an initial bomb attack on either a military or civilian target the probability is extremely high of a secondary detonation – designed to blow up first responders who may move into the area to help the hurt and injured in the first attack.
Should you be caught up in a terrorist bomb attack and are lucky enough to survive, you should leave the area immediately and get as far away from that particular location as humanly possible. Remember don’t hang around the periphery.
While I hope to God you will never need this information, knowing it could help save your life.
