A proposal to establish an IIT in Syrian capital Damascus, has been submitted by Syrian Technology and Communication minister Mr.Emad Sabouni accompanying the President of Syria, Mr.Bashar al-Assad, who is currently on a state visit to India.
Meant to upgrade the technical man power of Syria, the delegation have been so impressed by the contributions made by these IITs to India’s development that they even termed the IITs as ‘Shining example for Asia’.
Under the proposal, Syria will provide land and subsidise the Institute. India on the other hand is to provide partial funding and full teaching faculty. The Syrian delegation assured India that a ‘massive’ demand for IIT exists in West Asia, which would make the Institute profitable for India.
Syria is the second country after Singapore to seek an IIT on its soil. Singapore has requested for an IIT in 2006 and repeated the request in 2007 too. India has assured Syria that it would consider the proposal. But the HRD ministry is not yet ready to set up a full-fledged IIT overseas, at least not in near future.
