The Vasundhara Raje government has alloted a new set of 5%
reservations to the Gujjars who will now be classified as the most
backward classes.Reservations are aimed at not only pacifying
the Gujjars but to placate all. So, while creating a special
cateogory for Gujjars, a 14% reservation has also been
accomodated for the economically backward general cateogory.
This will take the total to a 68% reserved cateogory in rajasthan.
The reservation order, is however, vulnerable, to legal scrutiny.
Presently, Rajasthan has 49% reservations for SC, ST and OBCs.
Vasundhara Raje has also assured the Gujjars on recommending
a ST status for them to the centre, which was their original
demand.
The 5% reservation of Gujjars has to be however shared with
the banjaras, Raikas and Gadiya Lohars, who currently account for
the OBC cateogory. Rawats and some other communities have
although not been included.
The gujjars will now enjoy benefits in admission in
educational institutes, state governmental jobs and elections in
panchayats.
While, the 14% reservation accounts for Brahmins, Rajputs,
Vaishyas and Kayasths. Seems like, Raje’s all set to win the
elections this year.
