The endorsement from Ted Kennedy which was sought after could help US Democratic hopeful Barack Obama among Hispanics and the working class. Obama has received the endorsements of two generation of Kennedys. The Kennedy family is the best-known political family of the Democratic Party.
Ted Kennedy said that Obama had extraordinary gifts of leadership and character. He said that Obama was a worthy heir to his assassinated brother.
“It was a moment packed with political significance,” said Jeff Greenfield, a CBS senior political correspondent. He then added: “Ted and Caroline Kennedy – the surviving brother and surviving child of the most revered Democratic President – declaring that the torch has been passed.
“I feel change in the air,” said Ted Kennedy in a speech. He also added criticism of both US Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and her husband, former US President Bill Clinton.
The endorsement was sought out by all of the three remaining contenders. Ted Kennedy is in his fifth decade in the United States Senate. Due to his position, Kennedy could help Barack Obama court the both the Hispanic voters and rank-and-file members of the labor unions. Both are two vital elements to the Democratic Party.
Ted Kennedy is expected to be active in campaigning for Barack Obama days before Super Tuesday.
“This is more than just politics for me. It is personal,” Obama had said when it was his turn to speak.
Kennedy would also seek to rebut many arguments by Obama’s critics.
“From the beginning, he opposed the war in Iraq. And let no one deny the truth,” Kennedy said in reference to Bill Clinton’s statement.
“With Barack Obama, we will turn the page on the old politics of misrepresentation and distortion.
“With Barack Obama we will close the book on the old politics of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay,” Kennedy had added.
