India is an amazing country. With the globalisation and a very nauseating, self deprecating western culture stepping in, the entire world is watching us now, we have moved onto the next level with respect to our economy and am hopeful will continue to do so in the next few years. But have all these changed our mindset with respect to women. The Indian Male is still a psychologically weak individual, always afraid to move from the stereotype. Most Males in India are inherently chauvinistic when it comes to the other, the women.
Women in India have indeed adapted themselves very well to the changing Indian work culture where they have learnt to balance their duties at work as well as at home, but the male is still the dominant figure who will want to decide as to what the women should ,shouldn’t or of course ought to do. He will not stop to think even once why should he decide for anyone whether his wife, sister or any other female acquaintance. The male always has some advice handy for women in India.
It is his guilt ridden consciousness that makes him want his wife, sister, and mother to dress conservatively because he will look at every women lecherously be it at his workplace, the bus stop, the restaurants or even the slums, and very sadly even if the modesty of the women is being outraged he has the gaze at her, it is his way of protecting his loved ones from himself, his archetype. The Indian Male. Where he lacks in courage he makes up by being conservative taking recourse in traditions, religion and what not when that fails his male ego, his will to power over the other takes dominance.
There was a very outrageous incident that took place in guwahati on the 24th of November 2007, where a young adivasi (a term used for the indigenous minority tribal people of India) woman was stripped naked by a group of three young men all from diverse economic backgrounds one being waiter, the other the owner of a fast food joint and the third owned a paan shop. She was part of the procession in demand for a schedule tribe status for them, when the procession turned violent and led to the incident. These incidents happen and have happened in the past and will continue to happen.
The most shocking observation of the incident was the fact while the girl ran down the street nude the bystander instead of helping her were taking pictures and videos with their mobile phone cameras. They were recording the plight of a women in distress, a women stripped to the nude, they still had a lecherous yearning for her. Then this is the Indian Male. A blatant lustful weakling, who waits like a hyena to pounce on women even after the women are ravaged.
It’s a shame. A shameful Tragedy.
