The race for the top position in UMNO[United Malay National Organisation] is officially on.
While the post of President is almost certain to be won by Najib Razak who is now the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, the post of Deputy President will see a three cornered fight.
Three senior members of UMNO vying for the post are, Muhyiddin Yassin, Muhammad Taib and Ali Rustam. They are also holding senior position in the cabinet.
What captured the attention of political analysts in the country is the convention that the Deputy President of UMNO will always be the deputy Prime Minister. UMNO as we all know is the lead actor in the National Front Coalition.
The race for the post Vice President will also be a crowded affair. Five candidates have also met the criteria for the contest.
While the favourite as far as the number of nominations received so far is Muhyiddin, party members say it is still an open affair.
"We’ll never know untill all the votes are counted,"they said.
UMNO is still in the process of healing itself after the slightings by voters during the last election. It was badly bruised even though it manged to cling on to power. The Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi, have agreed to hand over power to Najib Razak after the party’s election which is schedule for march 2009.
