Troy Davis, a man convicted of killing police officer Mark McPhail in 1989 is scheduled to be put to death via lethal injection at 7 p.m. tonight. In the years since his trial, however, seven of nine key witnesses have withdrawn their testimony and questions linger about whether Troy Davis is really guilty of murder.
In opposition to Troy Davis’ murder, protesters across the state will picket, stage a "die-in" and hold candlelight vigils for a man they believe deserves another trial.
A spokesperson for one group, Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, said "As long as the state continues this futile and brutalizing exercise in vengeance, we will continue to take a public stand against killing Troy Davis in our names." Protesters will also picket Rainbow Medical Associates, a company that supplies nurses to assist in the lethal execution.
Mark McPhail was a 27 year-old father of two when he was shot to death in a Savannah, Georgia parking lot. He was a police man but was not on duty at the time of the shooting.
