Two girls killed in Co Longford crash in Dublin

Two girls aged six and nine have died after a car crash in Co Longford last night.

It is understood the BMW hatchback car in which the two girls were travelling hit an embankment and left the road on the old N4 at Camlisk outside Edgeworthstown at around 9.30pm.

The nine-year-old girl died at the scene, and the six-year-old died in hospital.

Two adults and two other children were in the car. All four were injured and were taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar. One woman has since been released from hospital.

One of the injured children underwent surgery last night and is reportedly in a critical condition. A second child was moved to Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin this morning.

The road is closed and is not expected to reopen until later this afternoon.
