SUBJECT: University of Delaware Junior Morgan Whyte Named CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week
DATE: December 9, 2014
RICHMOND, Va. – After a weekend that saw her advance to the finals of the 50 freestyle event at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships, University of Delaware swimmer Morgan Whyte was named Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Swimmer of the Week Tuesday.
Whyte (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John’s College HS) qualified for the 50 freestyle finals with the season-best time of 22.98 in her heat. Whyte holds the UD record in the event with a time of 22.70 at last year’s Colonial Athletic Association Championship, and her performance in Thursday’s heat represents the second fastest time in Blue Hen history.
In Thursday night’s finals, Whyte put forth another strong performance as the junior swam the 50 freestyle in 22.99, which was good for the 16th fastest time in the finals.
Whyte put forth another fast time Saturday, this time in the 100 freestyle. The junior tallied a 41st place finish with a time of 51.08, which was the third fastest time in program history and the fastest time for Whyte since last season’s CAA Championship.
Sunday, Whyte came the closest to recording a qualifying time at the Long Course Time Trials as the junior swam in the 50 freestyle in 26.45. Whyte’s time was good for a third place finish and missed out on a qualifying time by .26 seconds.
“Morgan had some great swims at both Nationals and the Long Course Time Trials,” said University of Delaware head coach John Hayman. “She was our first swimmer in the school’s history to make finals at Nationals. Morgan also rose to the occasion in her first long course meet of her career and just missed making the Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 50 meter freestyle.”
The Blue Hens next meet will come on Jan. 10 when the men will swim against Drexel, while the women will participate in a dual meet with the Dragons and Northeastern.
