US Criticizes Vietnam For Failing To Police & Enforce Its Adoption System

The United States Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam, criticizes the Vietnamese government in a new report. It has accused the Vietnamese government of not policing and enforcing the laws and policy of its adoption system. As a result, there has been wide-spread corruption as a result. Because of the corruption, there have been many cases of fraud, baby-selling, and human trafficking.

According to the United States ambassador to Vietnam, Jonathan Aloisi, of all of the worst case scenarios, this is by far the worse to come across. Aloisi says it with good reason due to the contents of the report which spans for nine-pages. While it is nine-pages, the report is fully detailed. The report has given depth of the severity of the situation.

It describes that infants were being sold by hospitals because their mothers did not have enough money to pay bills. Also, the report adds that the hospital officials did not even tell the members of the children’s families. In short, a mother would not know that her child would be sold off as a result. But, this was not the other means on how children were sold off. The report also details and documents how people go out to villages throughout Vietnam to search for babies.

Vietnam and China are two of the top countries for overseas adoptions. While most of the adoptions are legal and ethical, many more adoptions have been halted over the lack of infrastructure in regards to Vietnam’s adoption system.

Several months ago, Vietnam has been given a two-year trial membership in the United Nations Security Council to see if it could handle issues on a global level. The failure to police the adoption system may affect the status of membership at the end of that trial.
