With cameras installed at various traffic junctions in Hyderabad ,A.P the police now have video-evidence against traffic violators. It is two months since 99 cameras were installed at 89 junctions around the city while five cameras are reserved for emergency.
The cameras at the signals are connected to a BSNL modem that sends all the recorded data to the telephone exchange and the feed is transferred to the mini exchange placed at the control room. From 8.30 am to 10 pm, the police keep an eye on the traffic flow and after 10 pm, places vulnerable to violence are monitored by inspectors by observing traffic flow from the control room.
The cameras are mainly installed in public places such as amusement parks, bus stations, railways stations and places vulnerable to violence. This set-up is expected to have more impact especially at time of crisis caused by anti social elements.
Statistics say that more than 10 cases of violation per day are recorded at every traffic signal. "There is no need for us to stop a violator and fine him now. By zooming in the camera, we can easily identify the vehicle number and so we can directly send challans to the violator’s residence along with a notice.
