It’s amazing what people will do to lose weight. I know because I’ve struggled with weight loss all of my life and I’ve tried a variety of diets too. It’s hard for me to believe any person would ever swallow a tapeworm that was purchased off of an Internet site to lose weight quickly. Would you ever consider this kind of drastic action to lose weight?
This Fox News report gave me reasons to be concerned for people who are desiring to lose weight. When a person struggles to lose weight, many times they’ll go to any measure such as this woman living in Iowa did to lose weight and she made a choice to swallow a tapeworm purchased off of the Internet to accomplish her mission. Can you imagine this? She could have swallowed any type of worm, who knows?
The woman did not check with a professional doctor prior to swallowing the tapeworm but she did consult a physician later to tell him of her drastic weight loss measure. The physician was baffled by the woman’s actions and he did not know what to do, he contacted the Iowa Department of Public Health for help.
Dr. Patricia Quinisk, Iowa’s Public Health Department’s medical director, informed her physician to prescribe an anti-worm medication and to also issue a warning to health workers about the dangerous practice.
Quinisk wrote, “Ingesting tapeworms is extremely risky and can cause a wide range of undesirable side effects, including rare deaths; and those who are desiring to lose weight are advised to stick with proven weight loss methods, consuming fewer calories and increasing physical activity.”
Did you know that tapeworms live in the human digestive tract and their larvae can be absorbed by eating undercooked meat? My parents told me this when I was a child and their warnings have always kept me in touch with the way my meat should be cooked. If you do get a tapeworm by ingesting one, the symptoms can go unnoticed and this can lead to weight loss and headaches in addition to other things.
In my opinion people should never take drastic actions to lose weight because they never know the repercussions it can have on their health. I’ve learned throughout my years of dieting that following a sensible diet is the most sensible thing to do because we never know what these fad type diets can do to our bodies systems. I also noticed that when I followed a fad diet the weight did not come off as quickly as following a sensible diet.
