In the wake of reports of considerable weakening of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) position against the advancing Sri Lankan Army, the DMK of Tamilnadu has stepped up pressure on Central Government to persuade Sri Lankan Government to stop pro-active military offensive against LTTE or else they may withdraw support to the UPA. To pressurize the central government, the DMK has secured post-dated (29th October’08) resignation letters from its MPs addressed to the speaker of the house.
Under pressure, Foreign secretary Shiv Shanker Menon summoned Sri Lankan High Commissioner C.R.Jayasinghe and told him that Colombo should find a negotiated settlement to the ethnic problem involving Tamils rather than looking for a military victory.
It is well known that LTTE is waging a war of Independence against tiny Sri Lanka island state with a population of 21 million and a small area of 65000 square kilometers, demanding a separate Eelam (country) for the Tamil settlers of Sri Lanka who barely constitute 17% of Sri Lanka population.
Digging a bit into history, the Indian Prime Minister Rajib Gandhi tried to bring peace in the island state through a negotiated settlement short of separate Elam in 1987. But the Tamil Tiger chief Prabhakaran was adamant for separate Eelam and walked out of the joint tripartite meeting in New Delhi.
While walking out of the tripartite meeting in Delhi, the Tiger chief Prabhakaran said to have remarked ‘I shall see this Rajib.’ He actually managed to saw him dead when a women human bomb ‘Dhanu’ took away Rajib’s life in Sriperambudur in Tamilnadu in 1991.
Largely because of non-compliance by LTTE, India has to send two divisions of Indian Army in Sri Lanka as peace keeping force in 1987. The Indian army suffered heavy causalities in its over two years stay with some 1250 solders dead and about 6500 wounded by the heavily armed and motivated Tamil Tigers.
The LTTE have been described by various assessments as the most ferocious and motivated counter force, which has become a full-fledged army of about 7000 odd soldiers with its own Navy and air force (with at least four air crafts)
But the moot question is why should such a terrorist gang be given political support, which is out to divide a small nation by sheer firepower. Why then Kashmir cannot be further divided or given to Pakistan Mr. Karunanidhi?
Karunanidhi cites the intervention of India in Bangladesh and probably wants India to follow the example. But Karunanidhi should understand that Bangladesh was born because Muzibur Rahaman was denied power in spite of his winning the Pakistan elections decisively. The whole Nation rose in revolt against Pakistani occupation as a result of this. Further, for reasons of high enmity between India and Pakistan in those days, it was in India’s strategic interests to break Pakistan.
But Sri Lanka is India’s friendly country and Prabhakaran has proved to be India’s enemy number-1 (in my opinion) by killing Rajib. In fact time has come when Prabhakaran can be taught a lesson and Karunanidhi have no business in protecting him as he has also reddened his hand by merciless killing not only of innocent Sinhala masses but in his hot pursuit to become undisputed leader of Tamil population, he has also killed Tamils who have shown the slightest opposition to him. Prabhakaran is a terrorist Mr. Karunanidhi.
