This year marks the 25th anniversary of World AIDS Day. A holiday set up to bring awareness and understanding to the world-wide pandemic every December 1st.
Every year they put together a theme, and this year is no different. This years theme is “Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation.” Meaning that looking towards the future an AIDS free world may soon be possible through education, testing and Government help.
With an estimated 31.5 million people living with HIV it’s more important than ever for all countries to become involved and devote themselves to this cause.
Even President Obama weighed in on the situation stating:
Each year on World AIDS Day, we come together as a global community to fight a devastating pandemic. We remember the friends and loved ones we have lost, stand with the estimated 35 million people living with HIV/AIDS, and renew our commitment to preventing the spread of this virus at home and abroad. If we channel our energy and compassion into science-based results, an AIDS-free generation is within our reach.
Around the world almost two hundred countries will be observing the day, and you can too. Look up events in your area to find out what you can do to help with the efforts, whether it be financially or with your time. If everyone works together we can be HIV free within a generation.
