Hundreds of underprivileged and street children, enrolled under project PAHL of Damodhar Satri Udyog sanstha on Monday celebrated world water day by taking a pledge to conserve water and also took oath to spread more awareness on the subject in the slum dwellings and their neighbourhood.
On the occasion a special lecture was delivered by secretary of the sanstha, Sunita Chandra and other faculty members teaching 110 students enrolled in project PAHL.
The theme of the special lecture was conservation of water resources and good habits.Jasmeet Singh Madan, a volunteer who is working on the project also delivered a special lecture and demonstrated various techniques in front of children on how to save water while discharging daily house hold duties.
In her address to the students Sunita Chandra said that the root cause of diseases prevalent among children is consumption of dirty water. She said utmost care should be taken to ensure all teh children are fed clean water and pollution of water resources should be stopped by launching a sustained campaign by the members of the civil society.
It may be mentioned that the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development ( UNCED) had recommended the March 22 as an international day to celebrate freshwater day and later on the United Nations General Assembly 1993 responded by designating 22nd March as the first World Water Day and since then it is being celebrated globally reminding the world community to conserve the water by using it judiciously.
On the occasion faculty of the project PAHL demonstrated different techniques for saving water daily. For example while cleaning teeth an individual usually consumes 5 litre water if the tap is half running but if we use tumbler or glass filled with water it needs only 1 litre – thus saving of 4 litres of water can be acheived by incorporating such practices in our behaviour.
Similarly while washing hands one human being uses 4 litres water with full running tap but if we wash our hands with half running tap it will require 1 or 2 litres thus saving of 2 litres water. Similary efforts should be made tosave water while doing other house hold chores such as cleaning surfaces, motor vehciles, gardening, shaving, flushing toilet etc.
In his brief lecture Jasmeet Singh later said that students are the best messengers of the society and the future of the nation and if they are made more
aware their parents and neighbours too will follow the path and in this way we can conserve millions of litre of water which is daily wasted
by us out of our ignorance.
On the occasion students also appealed to the general public to use the water judiciously as the water table is going down with each passing day
In another function students of
water and focus attention on the importance of freshwater and the sustainable management of freshwater resources by the Government teacher, Jasmeet Singh Madan who is working voluntarily to save the environment and water conservation
The other methods to be adopted while shaving, shower, flushing toilet, watering plants, washing floors or washing cars were also highlighted by Jasmeet to over 250 students mostly comprising of Middle School New Plot and adjoining localities.
The students listened the lecture attentively and pledged to conserve the water by adopting these techniques in their daily habit and stop its wastage in future which was highly appreciated by the Headmasterof the
