The residents of Winchester have performed “poorly” according to the report carried out by the Stockholm Environment Institute. The report ranked by the average ecological footprints of residents living throughout sixty cities throughout England, Scotland, and Wales.
The report also went over the amount of food, energy, and resources a person would need to absorb waste and pollution. This was all dependent on the land and sea area. They added that the main factors for the footprint of the individual residents were housing, transportation, food, consumer goods, and services. While the residents of Winchester have the largest ecological footprint, the residents of both Newport and Plymouth have the smallest.
Despite the small footprints, almost three planets would be needed for them according to the researchers.
The World Wildlife Foundation states that people were at the moment depleting the earth’s natural resources. It’s stated that people are depleting resources faster than they can be replaced. They add that the resident’s of Winchester, UK are the key to the rapid depletion of natural resources.
WWF’s head of campaigns Mr. Colin Butfield calls on people to reduce their impact on the environment. He says they should spend their holidays closer to home along with reducing energy use in their homes. Butfield adds that both the government and the businesses have a very big role to play.
He states that consumers, business, and the government must work together to reduce the impact on the environment.
