3 Important Things That Every Entrepreneur Should Keep In Mind

Here are the 3 most essential things that every entrepreneur should keep in mind:

1. Strive for excellence, not success: If you excel in something, you will automatically succeed in that. From one perspective, there is not much difference between working towards excellence and working towards success, but, from another perspective, the two are worlds apart. Excellence is permanent, success is temporary.

When a person tries to excel in something, he focuses on doing things correctly and perfectly, to the best of his ability, not on doing things which would merely succeed. There are no shortcuts to achieving excellence; it involves working hard and long. When you work towards excellence, you don’t leave things to chance or to any other external factor. It is also the ability to stay agnostic of anything other than your own self, in order to achieve success.

Striving for excellence is pure because it is neither a competition nor a race; it is an individual journey to attain knowledge and to achieve perfection in something. If you excel in something and if you have the talent for it and the tenacity to persevere in it, you will automatically succeed in that field.

At the same time, let us keep in mind that it takes time to achieve excellence, but it does not necessarily mean that everything which takes more time is excellent.

2. Make things simple: Human beings tend to complicate things. Whatever you see around you that is the least bit complex or confusing has been created by man. And complex things are undesirable, even if they give the same result as simple things. Simple is always better and beautiful. We will need to consult a human behavior expert to find the answer.

Often, when we are given a task, we get so involved in completing it that we don’t give too much importance to the quality of the end result. At other times, we are so neck-deep in executing one part of the task that we are incapable of seeing how it will be after all the parts have been put together. Generally, people believe that something complex will be better or more interesting since a lot of time and effort had been put into making it. Yes, the last part is true, but it does not follow that it will be better.

3. Keep your product simple. If someone can use your product in two steps, don’t make it three steps. If one click can do something, don’t use two. If one page is adequate to explain your product, then don’t use two.

Put this into practice when making your product for your customers and setting up the processes and systems for your employees. The only way to simplify things is to tell yourself constantly that that is what you have to do and to keep on doing it. Focus on making things simple and then, still simpler. Very soon, you will realize that it has become a habit.

Actually, making things simple needs to become a habit, not a method or a way which one carries to work. You cannot simplify things only at work. To make it happen, it has to become a way of life. It is important to embed this attitude in everybody in your start-up too. Complexity consumes time, energy, bandwidth, brains, money and, most importantly, it hampers your putting all these things into something that is simple. Consumers don’t like anything complex, they prefer things that are simple to understand and use. Four simple suggestions you could use:

  • l Remove things that are not needed; retain only those that are really needed.
  • l In many cases, less simplifies things.
  • l Always try to evaluate and see whether two steps can be combined into one.
  • l Leave as little as you can to a customer comprehension. The easier and clearer you make it for him, the simpler your product will be.
  • l Your product and service should be aimed at simplifying, not complicating, something.
