International Symposium on “Saffron”held at SKICC

 

Srinagar/Jammu, November 03(Scoop News)-  The initiative of introducing Saffron (Crocus sativus) cultivation in non- traditional areas located in the temperate agro-climatic sub-region spread over 8 districts of Jammu Division i.e. Doda, Ramban, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua and Kishtwar is yielding encouraging results.

This was disclosed by Dr. Rama Kant Sharma, Dy.Director Agriculture (Central), Directorate of Agriculture, Jammu while delivering a lecture on potential of Saffron in non-traditional areas of Jammu Division in 4th International Symposium on “Saffron“ held at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex,  Cheshmashahi Srinagar. He elaborated that results of these trials in Batote (Ramban), Pernote (Doda), Pancheri (Udhampur) were encouraging and the Directorate of Agriculture Jammu was keenly studying possibility of area expansion in collaboration with scientists of SKUAST-Jammu.

The symposium organized by SKUAST-K on the theme “Advances in Saffron Biology, Technology and Trade”  was well structured to discuss about advances in saffron biology, biotechnology, advances in medicinal and industrial application as well as innovations and social economic domain to identify opportunities and future challenges for growth of saffron industry in J&K State.

            Dr.Sharma further disclosed that Saffron used as flavoring and colouring agent in various recipes including Wazwan, sweet rice, biryani etc is a perennial crop and besides Kashmir it is grown traditionally in loamy krewa soil of Kishtwar district.

            While elaborating upon implementation of Saffron Mission in the State, Dr. Sharma also discussed steps taken to enhance productivity of Saffron with good package of practices including rejuvenation, organic farming of saffron, marketing etc. He also highlighted the major future challenges i.e. evolving of disease and drought resistant varieties.

            Other officers from the Directorate of Agriculture Jammu who attended the Symposium included Satish Bhagat, Saffron Development Officer, Kishtwar, Vijay Kumar, SMS (SDL), Udhampur, Sudhir Manhas, Jatinder Kumar Choudhary besides JAEO’s of Udhampur District.
