"Monster Princess" aka "Princess Resurrection" is an ongoing Japanese anime series directed by Masayuki Sakoi and produced by "Madhouse." It had started airing on April 12, 2007 and it’s still ongoing. The manga itself was launched in 2005 and is still ongoing itself. The manga version is authored by Yasunori Mitsunaga and published by "Kodansha." Monster Princess’ opening introduction established that this series has a lot of dealings with the supernatural along with a good dose of horror. It’s also shown that the series is pretty bloody and violent due to the fighting scenes and so forth. Some of the main characters are very violent in combat.
The name of "Monster Princess" comes from the term given to one of the main characters named Hime. Her father is the king of all monsters and thus makes Hime the princess of monsters or the "monster princess." She basically has no desire for the throne of her father and very much wants to live a "normal" life. Interestingly enough, she was born looking like a human. Even though she is not human, Hime is as physically strong as only a normal human being. But she is pretty bratty and tends to use people for her own self purposes as show in the beginning. She isn’t afraid of blood and violence. In terms of combat and labor, Hime usually leaves it to her servants. Hime is a person that shows no remorse or a care for the lives of her servants. Contrary to that, she will rush to save her servants.
However, Hime is a more than capable fighter as she can use swords and knives. But she’ll use whatever weapon at her disposal such as a chainsaw. It would look as if Hime’s favorite weapon is a chainsaw.
While a good deal revolves around Hime, Monster Princess revolves around Hiro Hiyoromi who "died" trying to save her from harm. As a result, he is resurrected by Hime by some magical flame which was Hime’s blood. As a result, Hiro has to serve Hime "forever." Hime makes Hiro do all sorts of menial jobs for no pay at all such as fixing the roof, doing the plumbing, and so forth. He questions how he got himself into this predicament in the first place. It’s a very humorous situation.
The two of them take on creatures sent by her siblings. It looks as if the throne is vacant or is about to be vacant. Though Hime has no desire of ruling over the monsters; her siblings still think of her as a possible threat. It mainly revolves fighting off the creatures and various factions that want Hime dead in the first place. But the two of them are assisted by a variety of characters whether they be human, hybrid, android, and/or non-human.
Hime is mainly accompanied by her servant Flandre who is an android with the appearance of a little girl. Despite her size and height, Flandre is more than capable of holding her own. She is endowed with superhuman strength and near invincibility. Flandre can tear trees from their places and use them as swinging weapons. The concept for Flandre is indeed very original. This is one child-like android that can very much pack a hard punch.
Employed by Hime is Sawawa who is Hiro’s older sister. She is basically the normal human main character. It also looks as if she’s the most clueless one. Interestingly enough, she may have some extra-senses by the way her large breasts react to something.
There is Liza Wildman, a half human and half werewolf girl. Because she is of mixed blood, Liza can only transform her arms up to her elbows.
They are also aided by Reiri Kamura who is also a vampire that freeloads at Hime’s place.
It’s a humorous and violent Japanese anime series with a lot of blood and violence to it. This is something that really isn’t for little kids to be watching. Overall, it’s a good series to watch if you’re all into werewolves, vampires, zombies, and so forth. Something like Monster Princess has potential when released to North America.
However, it remains unknown if and when this series will be licensed and released to North America.
