TEHRAN, IRAN— Today, a new round of public protests were held in several Iranian cities. The supporters of the opposition group, Green Movement, took to the streets in the capitol city of Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, and Rasht. In the Kurdish city of Mahabad, the opposition groups clashed with the security forces and scorched a truck belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
According to unconfirmed reports, the security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters.
The government forces were deployed in full force around the capitol city of Tehran. The Azadi square which has come to symbolized freedom remained under tight government control. The security presence around Azadi square was heavy throughout the day and the square remained inaccessible to the protesters.
The crowd was heard chanting “death to Khomeini” and “death to dictator”.
Elsewhere,students clashed with the security forces at Tehran University, according to eyewitnesses.
Although unconfirmed, one person was reportedly killed by the riot police.
The Iranian government has barred foreign journalist from covering the uprising. The government has also limited public’s access to internet and cell phones.
Meanwhile, the leaders of the opposition group are under house arrest and their ability to communicate with the outside world has been cut off by the Iranian security personnel.
