The following information has been gathered and compiled through personal experience, while traveling, teaching classes that include T’ai Chi, Qi Gong, herbal information, martial arts and other health related subjects. The article also contains feedback from students and anecdotal information from readers of my columns. The following are my opinions and deductions from those sources.
When We Know Where We Hold Our Tension, We Can Improve Our Life..
In the following it’s assumed you have consulted with a qualified health care professional.
Diabetes is a serious disease and there are literally millions of people in the US that are undiagnosed diabetics. Poor circulation to the extremities is one of the indications of diabetes. Tingling sensations in the feet and legs, skin ulcers, discoloration of the skin, muscle weakness and more, can be caused by poor circulation. There is information that comes from the realm of energy, known as Qi in Oriental terms, and from metaphysical counseling, that you may have never encountered. Also, see my article "Natural Ways to Increase Blood Flow to the Extremities."
Qi (pronounced chee), according to Oriental healing modalities, is the energy force in everything from crustaceans to the cosmos. If there is a blockage of Qi, there is disease. We know that blood and nutrients have to reach the legs and feet through the abdomen/pelvic region and upper legs. If there is stagnant Qi in that region, the lower legs and feet will be stressed due to lack of oxygen and nutrients carried by the blood to the area, and the waste products that aren’t taken away.
There can be overabundance or lack of Qi. Think of Qi as water in a pipe. If you have a shortage of water you have inadequate pressure. If you have a blockage, the pressure can build and something has to blow. Very simply stated, the needles used in acupuncture are antennas for Qi enhancement and/or dispersal; so are the pressure points in acupressure. With both you have to be knowledgeable concerning the correct points.
Another often used remedy in the orient is cupping. We very seldom hear about cupping, maybe because it’s so simple and works so well when used correctly and in the right application(s). Cupping is shaping the hand so the palm forms a cup and lightly tapping (cupping) the area of congestion. You don’t need to beat yourself up, but plan on spending some time, up to an hour a day in the beginning, less for maintenance. Don’t have time? Will you have the time to lie in a hospital bed or recover from surgery? Cupping is probably most familiar as a tool to loosen and dislodge congestion connected with respiratory problems. Congestion, in Oriental terms, is nothing more than an energy blockage. Personally I’ve used cupping to remedy exercise induced asthma, to solve tingling nerves that hadn’t responded to other forms of treatment and to speed healing of a broken clavicle (collar bone) by increasing circulation to the area.
Sometimes lower back pain can be caused by poisons or poor energy in the kidneys. Using the backs of the hands lightly tap on the back between the lower ribs and the top of the hipbone. This can dislodge poisons, help flush the kidneys and improve energy flow.
Metaphysically thinking, leg and foot problems can be caused by lack of understanding. Lack of understanding meaning that we don’t, or don’t want to, understand how we’re derailing our enlightenment physically, emotionally or spiritually and/or assuming others are our authority. Metaphysical practitioners connect the conscious mind in the forehead, the Christ mind at the crown of the head and the body brain in the solar plexus. Metaphysically, the solar plexus is subconsciously affected by understanding and in turn affects the heart, stomach and entire abdominal region. And you have, metaphysically speaking, a spiritual energy blockage problem. If spiritual energy isn’t in your belief system, just drop the spiritual part.
We’ve all heard about faith healing. We had one in our immediate family ten plus years ago. The diagnosis was prostate cancer. All conventional avenues were explored but the cancer spread to the bones. The prognosis was six months to live. Prayer meetings were held. At the next checkup the doctors found no sign of cancer anywhere. Unfortunately, even after the “message from God”, being typically human, no lifestyle adjustments were made. Not long ago the cancer returned and there were no remedies left. He was a wonderful person and we’ll miss him.
When we receive a message we need to read it completely because we might find it says, “P.S. make some changes.”
