Asserting that there was no alternative to the principle of self-determination, Pakistan has called for the peaceful settlement of Kashmir and Palestine questions (Reports Associated Press of Pakistan).
“For decades, the people of Palestine, and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, await the realization of their inalienable right to self-determination, promised to them by the United Nations and the international community,” Pakistan’s delegate Yasir Iqbal Butt told the UN General Assembly’s Decolonization Committee.
“Peaceful resolution of these core underlying issues is essential for achieving durable peace, stability and progress in the Middle East and South Asia,” he said while speaking in a debate on decolonization matters.
The Pakistan delegate hoped that the recent meeting between the leaders of India and Pakistan would allow for a continuation and deepening of a constructive dialogue for the peaceful resolution and satisfactory settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir issue.
Decolonization and the right to self-determination go hand in hand, he said. “Pakistan therefore supports the fundamental and inalienable right of all peoples, including the Non-Self Governing Territories, as well as in situations under foreign occupation and colonial or alien domination, to self-determination.”
