Finally, there is a bill signed that made both the White House and Congress happy. Republicans are happy and Democrats are happy. Today, United States President George W. Bush had signed a war spending bill that would provide $162 billion for both Iraq and Afghanistan. There would be no restrictions on how the money would be spent on. That part makes Bush happy.
In addition, there is no timetable in place to withdraw from Iraq.
However, the additions to the bill were accepted as well. One attachment was the extension to the GI Bill called the “Post 9/11 Veterans Assistance Act,” which extends education benefits to those that have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is an extension for unemployment benefits that goes up to thirteen weeks. Finally, there will be $2 billion to be used for disaster assistance to help the Midwest which had suffered from devastating floods.
So far, the Democrats are happy on that aspect.
The case of the GI Bill, it is inevitable that presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona and presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois will clash on. McCain had voiced his opposition to the extension of the GI Bill which was drawn up and co-sponsored by Democratic Senator Jim Webb of Virginia.
Obama had attacked McCain on the GI Bill. In debates between Obama and McCain, this could possibly be brought up.
