The Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) is organising a day-long conference to discuss the role of adopting military medicine practices for civilian emergency response. The conference will be held in the premises of Emergency Management Research Institute at Medchal, on Friday February 29.
The conference is open to all government officials of health, disaster management, , defence, from different states/Uts, organizations like NDMA, DRDO and Aviation Medicine, and major hospitals that have trauma programs.
The aim of the conference is to learn the best practices from Military Medicine so that they can be applied in Emergency Care (pre-hospital and hospital). These include on-scene and en route care, coordination with hospitals, surging skills, compact equipment, simulation and learn how EMRI can manage in adverse/challenging conditions and bring some of the best practices of Military Medicine into practice.
Like all other fields and professions, the field of military medicine has been evolving, more so in the last few decades, thanks to the rapid advances in technology, management, logistics, etc. Modern history traces ‘triage’ to French wars and emergency medicine to the American wars of the 50s and 60s. However, the ancient Hindu scripture, The Ramayana contains an interesting episode – the patient (Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama) lost consciousness on the battle-field; Hanuman was sent to fetch a drug Sanjeevini, and he literally moved the entire mountain to the battle-field. With the advent of technology, that is perhaps the direction in which we need to go, where medicine will go to man instead of man going to the hospital!
Another important aspect of the conference is to discover and discuss the link between Military Medicine and civilian usage, a factor that is currently missing. For the benefit of the common citizen, particularly in emergencies, this can be established. Further, as EMRI expands it’s ‘108’ service throughout the country, it will face challenging weather conditions for which it is least prepared now.
Speakers in the conference:
The conference will comprise distinguished speakers, like Lt. Gen. Y N Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), Brigadier T P Madhusudanan, Commandant and SEMO, Col. Dr Kumud Rai VSM and others.
